The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve it’s consider as the most well known cloud forest in the world for its wide variety of FLora and Fauna. It houses 2.5% of worldwide biodiversity. Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve’s climate is strongly influenced by air currents saturated with moisture that flows into the country from the northeast (trade winds). Among the mammal fauna of the Monteverde region includes marsupials, shrews, bats, primates, rabbits, gopher, squirrels, porcupine, agouti, canids and many more.
Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve. This 310-hectare reserve has a maxumum elevation of 1,680m, making it the highest cloud forest in the monteverde area. There are 13km of hiking trails, as well as an information center. Because it borders the Monteverde Reserve, a simila richness of flora and fauna is foun herem altough quetzals are not nearly as common. The $12 entry fee at this reserve goes directly to support local schools. The reserve is open from 7am to 4pm. Three-hour guided tours are available for $15 per person, not including entrance fee
This Tour gives you a glimpse into the traditional means of harvesting and processing coffee and sugar cane. The 2-hour tour also includes a ride in an ox-drawn cart, and a visit to their coffee farms. Depending upon the season, you may even get to pick a bushel of raw coffee beans. Back at the farmhouse you get to see how the raw materials are then turned into a variety of final products, including cane liquor, raw sugar and roasted coffee!
The Willdife Refuge Monteverde (or Refugio Vida Silvestre) is located a short drive away from the hotel. The protected area of 30 hectares was previously part of an agrarian farm. The Monteverde Wildlife Refuge offers a wide variety of fauna such as the majestic Quetzal, toucans, bellbirds, sloths, Olingos, raccoons and armadillos, hundreds of insects and interesting plants. Opens up daily from 7:00 am – 4:00 pm, the night hike in this reserve is rated as the best in the area and run on 2 schedules from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm and 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm.
Canopy and Canyoning. Located in Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, is the best one-stop shop for various adventurers and attractions in the area. In addition to an extensive canopy tour, with 15 cables connecting 18 platforms, they also have a network of trails and suspended bridges, a huge butterfly garden, a hummingbird garden, a snake exhibition, and a wonderful insect display museum
In Monteverde you’ll find a good variety of tree top walkways. Most of them offers trails and a series of suspension bridges that will allow you to look at the flora and fauna of the cloud forest from a total different perspective. The bridges span across canyons and some of them are really high! Take a day hike and get to know the beauties of Monteverde Cloud Forest.
